Oncology Outlook 2016

In recent years the practice of oncology has been focused on the treatment of the underlying malignancy. Symptom burden and side effects of treatment related to the malignancy have not been adequately addressed. ACGME core competencies recommend clinicians to identify patients' differences, values, preferences, and expressed needs and to utilize evidence-based methods to evaluate and manage patient’s symptom burdens with a multidisciplinary team approach. This activity will address deficiencies in supportive oncology, provide updates on evidence-based methodology in symptom management, define the role of multiple disciplines in managing the symptom burden in cancer patients, and provide education to increase confidence and knowledge.
