Alzheimer’s disease: from symptomatic treatments to the first disease-modifying therapies
For many years, treatments for Alzheimer’s disease primarily focused on alleviating symptoms, without affecting disease progression. The recent arrival of antibodies targeting amyloid-beta therefore represents an important shift: for the first time, treatments can slow cognitive and functional decline in the early stages of the disease. A review published in Sage Open Aging in 2025 provides an update on this new therapeutic approach, focusing on two antibodies now available in the United States: lecanemab and donanemab. Beyond their efficacy, the review highlights a key challenge: identifying patients who may benefit while carefully managing treatment-related risks.
