Observational studies have suggested a close association between the gut microbiota and the progression of chronic hepatitis B; however, a causal relationship has not been clearly demonstrated. In this study, genetic analyses were used to explore this connection further. Causal genetic links were identified between different types of microbiota and the progression of chronic hepatitis B. Certain microbes were associated with protective effects against chronic hepatitis B (Alphaproteobacteria, Prevotella). Conversely, other microbes were linked to detrimental effects on disease progression (Eggerthella, Eubacterium ventriosum, Holdemania, Ruminococcus gauvreauii). However, no causal relationship was found between genetically predicted hepatitis B and gut microbiota.
