In this systematic review with network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials, researchers evaluated different exercise modalities offered to adult patients with coronary heart disease: aerobic training (continuous or high-intensity intervals), resistance training, respiratory muscle exercise, water-based exercise, yoga, tai chi, qi gong and a combination of different types of exercise. In all, data from 178 randomized controlled trials involving 19,143 participants were analyzed. Several exercise interventions were shown to improve maximal oxygen consumption: high-intensity interval training, combined water-based exercise, moderate-intensity continuous exercise, combined aerobic and resistance exercise, water-based exercise, combined respiratory muscle training and aerobic exercise, moderate- or high-intensity continuous exercise and resistance training.
