“SPACE”: A Simple Framework to Better Meet the Needs of Patients with Autism

Among the 1 to 2% of the population affected by autism or autism spectrum disorders, there are not only children but also adults. These individuals have specific needs and often face significant challenges in accessing healthcare or the necessary accommodations.

Statistics show that people with autism have a reduced life expectancy—by 16 to 30 years compared to healthy individuals. This concerning gap may be due to barriers in accessing healthcare, which have harmful effects on both physical and mental health. Many healthcare professionals still feel ill-equipped to support these patients, lacking the training and experience needed to understand their specific needs and life experiences.

To address this situation, the authors of this publication have developed a simple framework called “SPACE.” This model considers the five fundamental needs of autistic individuals: sensory needs, predictability, acceptance, communication, and empathy. It also incorporates three additional dimensions: physical space, treatment space, and emotional space.
