To improve the diagnosis and prognosis of acute liver failure occurring in the context of chronic hepatitis B, it is essential to identify new biomarkers. In this study, researchers conducted metabolomic profiling of 1,024 plasma samples collected from patients with chronic hepatitis B who were hospitalized due to an acute exacerbation. Among them, 367 patients developed acute liver failure, while 657 did not. The researchers identified metabolites associated with 90-day mortality in patients who developed liver failure, as well as metabolites predictive of progression to acute liver failure within 28 days. Based on these newly identified biomarkers, they developed a new diagnostic test, which demonstrated superior accuracy compared to currently used approaches.
