Impact of Senescence on the Immunomodulatory Activity of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
Allergology and Immunology
The immunomodulatory activity of mesenchymal stem cells has sparked interest in the treatment of inflammatory disorders. However, several aspects still need to be clarified to better understand the immunosuppressive function of these cells. In this study, researchers established the transcriptomic profile of mesenchymal stem cells isolated from adipose tissue, bone marrow, the placental chorionic membrane, and the umbilical cord. Mesenchymal stem cells undergo a progressive senescence process that alters their immunomodulatory activity by reducing PD-L1 expression. GATA-2 has been identified as a regulator of both the senescence of these cells and PD-L1 expression. These findings are crucial for developing clinical applications of mesenchymal stem cells in inflammatory disorders.
