Alpha-Gal syndrome

Allergology and Immunology

IgE-mediated food allergies can cause anaphylactic shock and death. Currently, one of the leading causes of IgE-mediated delayed food allergy in the USA is linked to the presence of alpha-Gal in red meat (alpha-Gal syndrome). This cause of anaphylaxis is on the increase, and is thought to be linked to tick bites. The first-line treatment for these allergic reactions is rapid injection of epinephrine. In the case of alpha-Gal syndrome, prevention of allergic reactions is based on two key measures: avoidance of allergenic foods (in this case, red meat) and prevention of tick bites.
