The role of probiotics in respiratory tract Infections in children
Pediatrics
The potential benefit of probiotics in preventing respiratory tract infections in children remains unknown. This study, conducted on 70 children aged 6 months to 12 years with recurrent infections, assessed the effect of a two-week administration of probiotics containing Bifidobacterium and Lactobacillus acidophilus. The most common infections among these children were rhinitis, otitis media, and pharyngitis. Following probiotic treatment, the most significant reduction was observed in cases of rhinitis, otitis media, and bronchiolitis. Larger-scale prospective studies are needed to evaluate the potential role of probiotics in reducing the recurrence of respiratory tract infections in children.
