Towards a mediterranean diet for all!

Cardiology and Vascular Medicine

Based on data from 147,642 individuals living in 21 countries and participating in the PURE study, researchers developed a healthy eating score based on six food groups associated with a reduction in cardiovascular diseases and mortality (fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish, and dairy products). This score was subsequently tested in five major independent studies conducted across 70 countries. The benefits of this new dietary score were particularly evident in low-income countries, where the consumption of these six food groups is generally low among the general population. Inspired in part by the Mediterranean diet, this new dietary score proves to be more relevant than other previously defined scores for assessing cardiovascular disease risk and all-cause mortality.
