Lung function and frailty in the elderly

Pneumonology

Epidemiological studies have suggested a link between lung function and frailty in the elderly, but causality had not been explored until now. Using two-sample Mendelian randomization analyses, researchers have shown significant causal links between FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in one second), FEV1/FVC ratio, peak expiratory flow and frailty index. On the other hand, no significant association was observed between forced vital capacity and frailty index. Improving lung function in the elderly could help prevent frailty, at least to some extent.
